2020 FBE APPLE RUN WRAP UP
As we close the books on our 2020 event, we would like to say thank you for sticking with us! We know this was not the “usual” Apple Run, but we still had A LOT of fun and raised substantial funds for the Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE). This year, 437 runners ran more than 900 miles together. 900 Miles for Education!
The success of the Apple Run wouldn’t be possible without amazing sponsors that make this event possible and so graciously and generously support the work of the FBE.
An enormous thank you to The Belmont Chinese American Association, Hillside Garden, Rogaris Law Office, Shant Banosian Guaranteed Rate, Belmont Center Business Association, Moozy’s, and Triogo for your sponsorship and support.
The Foundation for Belmont Education offers everyone a heartfelt thank you for coming out to support our public schools. We can’t wait to see you next year!

2020 Apple Run Results
Register to Run!
Registration is now closed for the 2nd annual (1st virtual) FBE Apple Run taking place Friday, October 2 – Monday, October 12, 2020.
Registration for the 2020 Apple Run will be online only. There will be no in-person registration or race-day pick-up. Packets for all registered runners will be delivered by hand or mail prior to the start of the virtual race on October 2nd, 2020. Register early to make sure you receive an Apple Run shirt and, for the first 200 registrants, an Apple Run neck gaiter. Use the button below to register.
The FBE Apple 5K and 2K races are events that celebrate education in Belmont. The 5K run passes by four of Belmont’s schools (Burbank, Chenery, Wellington, and the High School) and recognizes Belmont’s commitment to educating its young.
Now in its eighth year, the FBE Apple Run has brought thousands of runners to the streets of Belmont, Massachusetts to support public education and innovation in the Belmont Public Schools. Since our inaugural event in 2013, the Apple Run has raised more than $150,000 for the Foundation for Belmont Education, a 501c3 non-profit organization that awards grants to the Belmont Public Schools to enrich the education provided to Belmont students.
2020 Virtual Run
2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic have brought us into uncertain times. Due to state-wide restrictions, an in-person race is not permitted prior to the State entering Phase 4 of the pandemic response, which correlates with the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine. As a result, the FBE is planning for our October race to be a virtual event. If circumstances change between now and race day, this will be revisited. In the spirit of turning ‘lemons into lemonade,’ the FBE intends to make our virtual Apple Run a fun and inclusive event.
Warm up with Donna Ognibene – HERE
A safe approach to running is to warm up properly before hand! Donna Ognibene, will be back again to help everyone loosen up and warm up before they take on the Apple Run. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and the race being virtual this year, we will be holding a Zoom session with Donna and posting the recording on our social media feeds. We hope you join Donna and us to make sure you are ready to race. The link to Zoom session was provided to all registered participants and a recording is available HERE.
It wouldn’t be an FBE Run without DJ Paul Maden!
DJ Paul Maden has put together a classic FBE Apple Run playlist especially for our runners! This is available to download via Spotify HERE! DJ Paul Maden’s TOP TIP for making this listening experience just like he’s right there running with you! Go to your settings in Spotify – select Playback – adjust the Crossfade slider to 9 seconds. This will mix the music rather than a cold end/start to songs.
For the 2020 virtual Apple Run, races will be “run” during a window that opens on October 2nd and closes at the end of the day on October 12th. Participants will submit a GPS file or link from Garmin, Strava or other fitness trackers for verification.
- Participants who wish to be eligible for prizes must run the Apple Run 5K or 2K routes during that window.
- Participants who do not wish to be considered for a prize can run any 5K or 2K route during that period.
- The 5K course can be found here and the 2K course can be found here. To submit your times and or photo click here.
The FBE will place signs at the start/finish line of the courses as well as the standard course markers. Further, we plan to have a finish line and photo area set up at the track to help support running the race on your own time.
FBE SUPERHEROES RUN THE 5K COURSE!
RUN SAFELY! Our Superheroes have put together a fun and important video of running our 5K course, highlighting safe crossing points, and top tips on how best to run the course. We will not have police or public safety monitors on the course this year, so the FBE urges participants to beware of street traffic when running.
Please watch this fun, informative video HERE!
A HUGE THANK YOU TO: Scot DeDeo (Flash), Donal Reynolds (The Hulk), Lisa Engler (Wonder Woman), Becca Pizzi (Super Girl), Duane Bronson (Captain Underpants), and Videographer Douglas Hall
The FBE urges participants to follow all rules for social distancing and to be aware of street traffic when running the course.
** If you plan to run the Apple Run course between 9am – 4pm on a weekend or on Columbus Day, please reserve a time slot to ensure that there are not too many people on the course at once. Please reserve a slot at: https://tinyurl.com/applerunslots.
The cost for this year’s Apple Run options are as follows:
All participants in the 2020 Virtual Apple Run will receive a unique discount code for $10 off registration for the 2021 in-person event.
As in past years, the FBE welcomes team registrations for the 5K run. However, due to restrictions on group gatherings, we ask that group runs be restricted to families or groupings of individuals who have been quarantining together. Members of virtual teams consisting of individuals who have not been quarantining together should run the race individually. The Racewire platform will compile team results and standings from individuals who designate they are members of a given team.
It’s here! Our 8 week training program led by our very own FBE Apple Run Couch-to-5K coach Scot DeDeo. For the past two years, this program has been paired with the race for an additional fee. This year, we invite runners to join in the C25K training program at no additional cost.
The program consists of:
8-week training plans: beginner and moderate
Weekly training letters to keep you inspired
Weekly challenges to keep you motivated
The full training article and links to the training plans can be found HERE. In addition, workouts will be posted to the FBE Facebook page each week along with a training article to help coach runners to a successful 5K run.
As in past years, the C25K program will be led by Scot DeDeo, our race co-director. Scot is an ultra marathoner who has completed more than 180 events. In addition to the above training plans and training letters, Scot is available to answer your questions, build your confidence, and help get you into shape for our run.
For additional details or questions, please contact Scot at email@example.com.
As in past years, participants in the 2020 event will receive race t-shirts for both the 5K and 2K races. Adult and youth sizes are offered.
Details are as follows:
- 5K & 2K – A hi-tec short sleeve ‘quik-dri’ running shirt will be offered to the first 400 registered runners.
Additionally, Apple Run branded neck gaiters – a COVID-19 running essential – will be offered to the first 200 race registrants.
